Overview
As part of their cloud transformation strategy, a client engaged TDI Vertical to strengthen the security posture of their Microsoft Azure environment. The initiative focused on deploying next-generation firewalls (NGFWs) to protect cloud-hosted workloads, enforce traffic control policies, and secure connectivity between on-premises infrastructure and Azure.
TDI Vertical designed a robust security architecture that provided advanced threat prevention, deep visibility into east-west and north-south traffic, and unified policy enforcement across the hybrid landscape. The solution delivered resilient protection without compromising performance or agility—positioning the client to scale securely across cloud regions and services.
Business Challenge
The client had recently begun migrating mission-critical workloads to Azure but lacked comprehensive traffic visibility and control. Their security model relied primarily on Azure-native tools and perimeter defenses, which created significant blind spots in both:
- East-West Traffic
Lateral movement between virtual networks and workloads within Azure was not properly segmented or inspected. - North-South Traffic
Connectivity between on-premises infrastructure and the lacked deep inspection, auditing, and centralized control.
Additional challenges included:
- Security Inconsistency
Separate environments lacked standardized controls, creating risk of misconfigurations. - Insufficient Threat Prevention
Without next-gen capabilities like application control, IPS, or geo-blocking, the client was vulnerable to advanced threats. - Limited Monitoring and Response
Native tools offered limited integration with the client’s SIEM platform, slowing incident detection and response.
The organization needed a scalable, high-availability firewall architecture that could provide unified protection, real-time visibility, and policy consistency across the entire hybrid cloud.
Solution & Design
TDI Vertical led the end-to-end deployment of an enterprise-grade firewall architecture within the client’s Azure subscription, ensuring zero downtime and seamless integration. Key components of the solution included:
- NGFW Deployment
Installed highly available next-generation firewalls within Azure zones, integrated with Azure Virtual WAN and key virtual networks for scalable coverage. - Traffic Steering and Inspection
Configured User Defined Routes (UDRs) to direct inter-VNet and on-prem/cloud traffic through the firewalls for full inspection. - Hybrid Connectivity Protection
Integrated ExpressRoute and site-to-site VPN links with firewall-based inspection, logging, and alerting to secure north-south traffic. - Layered Policy Model
Developed application-aware firewall policies for threat prevention, access control, logging, and geo-blocking. - Centralized Management
Implemented unified policy control and analytics through a centralized firewall management console, integrated with SIEM for alerting and incident response.
The deployment was executed in phases, leveraging detailed planning, Azure infrastructure expertise, and zero-disruption migration techniques.
Unique TDI Vertical Contributions
TDI Vertical brought specialized knowledge in hybrid cloud security and deep Azure integration. Our contributions included:
- Azure-Native Firewall Design
Architected a solution optimized for scalability, high availability, and region expansion within Azure using best practices and zone-resilient design. - Compliance-Driven Approach
Aligned firewall configuration and policy enforcement with security frameworks such as NIST and ISO 27001. - Infrastructure-as-Code Efficiency
Used ARM templates and modular runbooks for consistent, repeatable deployments across environments. - Integrated Monitoring and Governance
Connected NGFW logs and alerts to the client’s SIEM platform, ensuring visibility and actionable insights across the hybrid network. - Ongoing Advisory
Delivered training and documentation while providing managed services for policy tuning, threat monitoring, and performance optimization.
Results & Impact
The project delivered strong security and operational outcomes that addressed the client’s hybrid visibility and control gaps:
- Comprehensive Traffic Inspection
Full inspection and control of both inter-cloud (east-west) and on-prem/cloud (north-south) traffic. - Advanced Threat Prevention
Enabled intrusion prevention, geo-IP filtering, and application control to block known and emerging threats. - Centralized Visibility & Response
Unified logging and alerting now feed directly into the client’s SIEM, accelerating detection and response cycles. - Policy Consistency Across Environments
Streamlined enforcement of rules across on-prem and cloud infrastructure, reducing risk of misconfigurations. - Improved Compliance Posture
Hardened ingress/egress controls and enhanced auditability across the hybrid landscape. - Reduced Complexity
Simplified hybrid security operations through centralization, automation, and robust policy design.
This deployment now serves as the core of the client’s broader cloud security strategy. It has unlocked new possibilities for expanding securely across Azure regions and tenants while enabling further adoption of Azure services.
TDI Vertical continues to support the client through managed services, offering proactive policy updates, performance tuning, and real-time threat monitoring to keep pace with the evolving risk landscape.
